Google Maps Engineer, Google

James Macgill trained as a Geographer but has been coding as a hobby from the age of 12. He jumped at the opportunity to work on the fusion of computing and maps when he joined Google Australia in 2005 where he works as an engineer on Google Maps. Most recently he worked on Mapplets a system to allow third party developers to add content and functionality to Google Maps.
James holds a PhD and Masters from the University of Leeds in the UK where he worked on spatial analysis techniques and took on the role of deputy director of the Centre for Computational Geography before moving to the Penn State GeoVISTA Center as a Senior Research Scientist.
When not fighting cross browser compatibility issues he is a keen open source and open standards advocate, founder of the GeoTools project, and proud charter member of OSGeo foundation.
