Rules

The FullCodePress organising committee (The Competition Organisers) is comprised of Webstock (New Zealand) and Web Industry Professionals Association Incorporated (Australia) members.

1. AIMS

  1. Promote a wider understanding of the different skills required to develop a website
  2. Promote best practice in the area of website design and development
  3. Stimulate the development of new talent and ideas
  4. Develop high quality websites for charitable or not-for-profit organisations
  5. Strengthen world-wide connections in the web industry
  6. Have fun

2. OBJECTIVES

  1. Teams compete to develop a website for a nominated charitable or not-for-profit organisation (the client).
  2. The teams will comprise individuals and will not be representative of organisations or businesses.
  3. The teams will have no prior knowledge of the client or site objectives beyond those disclosed by The Competition Organisers.
  4. The teams will have 24 hours to build the site and any associated systems.
  5. The site will be built at no cost to the client.
  6. At the end of the competition, the winning site will become the property of the client.
  7. The site should:
    1. Meet the needs of the client
    2. Conform to established W3C web standards with pages that validate to published formal grammars
    3. Have a high level of usability
    4. Have a high level of security and not expose site users to cyber attack
    5. Comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2 (WCAG 2) Level AA (NB: Teams will be advised of any exemptions prior to the competition)

3. FULLCODEPRESS TEAMS

  1. Each team will contain 6 members with the following roles (positions):
    1. Project manager
    2. User experience advocate (covers usability and IA)
    3. Graphic designer
    4. HTML/CSS marker-upper
    5. Programmer
    6. Content editor/wordsmith
  2. Any team member can help out with any of the designated roles
  3. Teams may also have up to 2 associate members to help with logistics and technical administration. These 2 members will not take part in the actual competition.

4. TEAM SELECTION

  1. Prospective team members for the Australian and New Zealand team must register their interest through the registration form on the website.
  2. WIPA will appoint a selection panel for the Australian team and Webstock will appoint a selection panel for the New Zealand team.
  3. The decisions of the selection panel will be final.

5. SELECTING THE CLIENT AND PREPARING THE BRIEF

  1. The Competition Organisers will be responsible for selecting the competition client(s), which will be an appropriate charitable or not-for-profit organisations.
  2. The Competition Organisers will liaise with the client(s) in developing a comprehensive website development brief.
  3. The Competition Organisers will prepare a client package for each client. The package will contain background information about the client as well as images and content the client would like to see on the site.
  4. The name of the client(s) and the nature of their business will be kept confidential until the first day of the competition.

6. COMPETITION RULES

  1. The competition will take place in a location determined by The Competition Organisers in the hosting country.
  2. All competition teams will provide full details to The Competition Organisers at least two weeks before the competition. This will include names and positions of team members, platform and environment they will be developing on, and any technical assistance needed.
  3. The organising committee will provide internet connection, whiteboard and access to a web server for each team. Representatives from The Competition Organisers will be on hand to provide limited technical assistance during the competition
  4. Each team will provide their own computers and network them together and to the server as needed.
  5. At 11.00am on the morning of the competition, the team members will assemble in a meeting room at the venue for the opening of the competition and to meet the client(s).
  6. At this meeting:
    1. All teams will be briefed as a group by the client representative(s).
    2. There will be an opportunity for team members to ask the organising committee or client representative questions.
  7. The Competition Organisers will supply team organisers with parameters outlining which platforms, technologies and costs are acceptable to the client. However, the resulting site should:
    1. Be valid and accessible
    2. Meet the stated needs of the client and be acceptable to the client
    3. Be able to be deployed by the client
    4. Have ongoing costs, such as maintenance, fees, upgrades, that are acceptable to the client
  8. Team members are not allowed to obtain outside assistance in building the site or associated systems by calling, emailing or communicating with any individual not on the team regarding an issue, problem or solution to do with development of the website. Breach of this rule will result in automatic disqualification. Note: We appreciate that teams may have existing pieces of markup and code they will use. Also that they may search for solutions to particular problems they encounter during the competition. This will be allowable. However we will be monitoring such activities during the competition and the judges and/or organising committee may ask teams at any time to explain their activities.
  9. Failure to work within the spirit of the rules may result in warnings and/or disqualifications.
  10. The teams will submit their work for judging within 24 hours. That is, by no later than 11.00am the following day.

7. PERMISSIONS

  1. The Competition Organisers plan to provide regular updates on the progress of the various teams during the competition.
  2. The updates may take the form of written reports, blogs, images, audio and video material for presentation on the web.
  3. During the competition The Competition Organisers, or any other authorised person, may speak to, record or video tape meetings and development work of the different teams.
  4. All team members will be required to sign a clearance form giving The Competition Organisers permission to use the information obtained and recordings of their voice and image for the purpose of disseminating information about the competition (for example via YouTube).

8. DECIDING THE WINNING SITE

  1. The competition organisers will appoint a judging panel for the competition.
  2. Prior to the start of the competition all participating teams will be told the evaluation criteria that will be used to judge the sites.
  3. The judging panel will review all the sites following the competition and decide on the winning site.
  4. Where the judging panel feels it is appropriate, it can also commend other entries.
  5. The decisions of the judging panel will be final and there is no provision for appeal or the re-judging of sites.

9. Logistics and sponsorship

  1. Individual teams will be responsible for arranging travel to and from the competition location and meeting all associated costs of this.
  2. The country hosting the competition will be responsible for providing accommodation and meals for team members during the competition.
  3. The Competition Organisers reserve the right to provide financial assistance to some or all of the teams competing at events.
  4. Overall sponsorship for the competition will be provided by The Competition Organisers.
  5. Individual teams are encouraged to seek their own sponsorship to assist with costs. All sponsorship of this nature, though, must be approved by The Competition Organisers.
